It reads like a storyline out of Nollywood. For the past 24 hours, some local online Nigerian news and entertainment sites and friends have been running with a story about a 29 years old Nigerian man named Abaeze Atuche who allegedly hacked into the United States citizenship system and gave himself, his family members and 15 of his friends US citizenship. According to Talk of Naija, “no details as to how he pulled it off yet but insiders say his skills are unbelievable. The US government online network is impregnable but this guy proved it otherwise. If he was not arrested I don’t think there was ever going to be an investigation on how his family members got their citizenship”. If the information is correct, he has done the unthinkable.
Some of us have that one Nigerian friend who can do almost anything because of his or her intellect. However, the above story sounds too good to be true and begs more questions than answers. For instance, why no major or even local US news outlet is carrying the story of this magnitude? Where are the pictures of the man in question? Is there any confirmation from the Nigerian government? Is this just another fake news to bring traffic to their websites? Probably.
Interestingly, if the story is true, it brings to light the need for African leaders to harness the power of their young people. It is a well established fact that some young Nigerians are involved in 419, yahoo yahoo scams because of the lack of opportunities.
Below are questions for you to think about and answer. Please note that there is no right or wrong answers. It just your opinion.
Should the U.S government deport Abaeze?
What should the Nigerian government do to him?
Should other African leaders offer him asylum?
